Trail running gear basics when starting out

Embarking on a journey into trail running can be an exciting experience, offering the chance to connect with nature while challenging both body and mind. However, before hitting the trails, it's essential to equip yourself with the right gear to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure. Here's a brief rundown of the trail running gear basics for beginners:

  1. Running Shoes: If you can do so, invest in a pair of trail-specific running shoes that offer stability, traction, and protection against rough terrain. Look for features like durable outsoles with aggressive treads for grip, supportive midsoles for cushioning, and a protective toe cap to shield against rocks and roots. Our favourite trail shoe brands are Salomon, HOKA, and ASICS.

  2. Clothing and chafe cream: If possible, opt for moisture-wicking and breathable clothing to keep you comfortable during your run. Choose lightweight, quick-drying materials that help regulate body temperature and wick sweat away from the skin to prevent chafing and discomfort. HOT TIP: Use chafe cream, if you don’t have any, we have used Coconut Oil in the past and that worked a treat.

  3. Hydration Vest: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially on longer trail runs. When starting out, make sure you have enough water with you on trail running adventures as water is not readily available out on the trails. Heat stroke and dehydration are no joke, and very dangerous. HOT TIP: Don’t drink from a stream or water source you stumble upon unless you are very experienced and know how to do this safely. You can VERY EASILY get extremely ill from doing so. Make sure you carry water with you. If you are in the position to do so consider carrying a hydration vest (this is an investment that is worth it if you are keen to make trail running a regular occurrence). Look for options with pockets for storing nutrition, keys, or other essentials. Our favourite is the Salomon hydration vest. You can buy front soft flasks or components for the back of your pack. HOT TIP for larger chested women: We previously used the front flasks (because that is the most common choice) but have now opted for the back component to distribute weight more evenly, game changer! It is a bit more challenging to understand how much hydration you have taken during your run though.

  4. Navigation Tools: Familiarize yourself with the trail route beforehand, and consider bringing a map, GPS watch, or smartphone with a trail-running app to help navigate unfamiliar terrain. These tools can also track your distance, pace, and elevation gain for a better understanding of your performance. We love our Garmin watch (though this is an investment and one we didn’t make when starting out), and we use Capra App for safe trail navigation.

  5. Safety Essentials: Prioritise safety by carrying a fully charged cellphone for emergencies, along with a small first aid kit containing essentials like adhesive bandages, blister pads, antiseptic wipes, sunscreen, and any personal medications you may need.

  6. Weather-Appropriate Gear: Check the weather forecast before heading out, and dress accordingly. Pack layers for variable conditions, including a lightweight waterproof jacket or windbreaker for protection against rain or wind.

By equipping yourself with the right trail running gear, you'll be well-prepared to tackle the challenges of off-road running while enjoying the beauty of nature. Remember to start slow, listen to your body, and have fun exploring new trails and experiences. Happy trails!
